Check out photos of a card I received from AADP a few weeks ago. I can’t believe 4 patients have already received stem cell transplants because of our Project Michelle efforts. Note, that these stats are just from AADP. I bet other Project Michelle drives outside of the SF Bay Area have also had success. I would love to get a total count of the donors that registered at a Project Michelle drive that have donated their stem cells to save someone else’s life (I’m an auditor….we like numbers). I am so proud of all of the Project Michelle volunteers. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I’m doing pretty good (mentally and physically) if I don’t say so myself. My days are filled drinking all sorts of concoctions, doing hours of qi gong and praying. This is a full time job, but I think it’s good to keep myself busy. While I do have my moments of sadness, overall I feel calm and at peace. This morning I had a blood draw and as I was walking out of the parking garage there was a couple hugging and blocking the stairwell. Once they detached, I saw that the lady was pregnant and moaning. SHE WAS GOING INTO LABOR. The husband was very patient and encouraging. I offered to get them a wheelchair, but the preggers wanted to walk to the hospital entrance (WOW tough cookie). I said “Congrats!!!,” did some spirit fingers and went on my merry way. It was the neatest thing I have seen in a long time. I wish I could have seen the birth. I definitely felt the love. It totally made my day. I figure if I can still appreciate and enjoy moments like that, I’m still doing ok.

p.s. I have the best hubby in the world. This morning Nurse Sharee put it best when she said we’re like peanut butter and jelly.

It’s good to be online blogging again! Thank you for all of your concerned messages when the site was down.

Like Van said all of my test results are coming back clean. I was especially excited about the negative MRI scans. No leukemia cells in the noggin! I also got my 2nd skin biopsy back and it was again negative for Skin GVHD. Luckily, the spots are going away on their own with the help of the topical steroid cream. My urine sample was also negative for the BK virus and my blood sample was negative for CMV. Today my nurse called me and said that I have been given the go ahead to stop all IV meds.

I had a final check up with the Oral Medicine dentist and he says that I may have the slightest mouth GVHD just based on the coloring of the sides of my tongue and the insides of my cheek. Also the skin on my lips slough off every 3 days or so no matter how much I mosturize them. My mouth doesn’t hurt at all, so he just told me to monitor it. Also when I complained to him that these days foods taste too salty, too sweet, etc. He said that this is common and is a sign that my tastebuds are coming back and that they will eventually mellow out. Interesting huh?

The only appointment that shook me up was with my nutritionist who told me that I have high cholesterol, high triglycerides and osteoporosis. Here are my current lipid levels (taken after fasting…so it’s probably even higher usually) and my levels pre-transplant (not fasting – so it was probably lower) with the normal range in parenthesis:

Cholesterol: 2/9/09: 288 mg/dL 10/15/08: 201 mg/dL (normal: below 200 mg/dL)

Triglyceride: 2/9/09: 563 mg/dL 10/15/08: 199 mg/dL (normal: below 150 mg/dL)

I’m in the high risk category!! My nutritionist reassured me that it’s the medication (cyclosporine) that is causing these increases. Nothing in my current diet could have caused such huge jumps in my levels. Now I have to load up on cold water fish (high in omega 3), fiber (it helps flush out fats), and more fruits and veggies (5 servings a day).

What I was most freaked out about was the Osteoporosis. When I think of osteoporosis I picture older women simply walking down the street, all of a sudden falling down and fracturing their hip bone. Scary! They did a bone density scan aka DEXA and found that there are certain areas in my body that was in the osteoporosis range or close to it (aka “osteopenia”). I don’t know what my bone density was prior to transplant, but I’m sure the radiation, chemo and meds have done a bit of damage to my bones. Fortunately I learned that women continue to grow bone density until they are 35. Soooo I have some time to repair my bones. Ladies, please load up on your calcium, vitamin D and get more exercise!!!!

Again another post that is probably too much info, but I figure this might be helpful to my fellow transplant patients.

Hey everyone, we’re really sorry that the website was down the past 6 days. Don’t worry, our technical issues did not reflect anything medical related. In fact, Michelle is doing quite well. See our prior post on the bone marrow biopsy results (which were negative) and our tentatively scheduled discharge date.

Since then Michelle has pretty much finished all her exit evaluations with no surprises. Even her MRI shows no evidence of disease! We’re definitely curious about this and are looking forward to seeing the scans this week.

We’ve spent the last few days planning our move back, increasing Michelle’s workout regimen, eating as much food from the cupboards as possible, and going to any restaurants we’ve meaning to go to. We even had a little excitement at the Pete Gross House. There was a small fire in one of the apartments on our floor so everyone had to exit the building and wait for the fire department to come and take care of everything. Luckily, only the sprinklers in that apartment went off so there was minor flooding in the complex. Most importantly, no one was hurt.

We’re still doing a lot of work on the website to get everything back to normal. In the meantime, please excuse the old layout, any bad links, missing blog comments/photos, or generally anything not working.

For those of you that know me well, you know that I’m not big on birthdays, holidays and general celebrations. Last week though, a good friend and I were talking about how Thanksgiving is probably one of the best holidays. It’s a relatively simple celebration that hasn’t been too commercialized and has no real obligations. You just surround yourself with family and friends and be thankful for what your life has brought you.

With that in mind, it was nice having Michael and Melanie join Michelle, my sister Agnes, and me here this past week so it would feel a little more like Thanksgiving. Because Michelle is still in the hospital, we weren’t able to have a traditional sit-down Thanksgiving meal. We still made it work though. We cooked up the usual dishes and brought Thanksgiving to Michelle. Michelle even surprised us by eating a little bit of turkey and mashed potatoes. That was her first meal in a couple of days, although she started IV nutrition the night before.

Michelle has been feeling a lot better the past few days. Her nausea has generally subsided and she’s not pushing her pain-pump every 6 minutes. She has been fighting a fever for a few days but today was fever-free. Unfortunately, the fever was replaced with a very annoying skin irritation that is making Michelle super itchy and driving her so crazy that she said she would rather be nauseous. So if it’s not one annoying side effect, then it’s another. I have a feeling it’s going to be like this for a while. It reminds of me of the arcade game below.

Overall though, things are going really well and we can’t complain. Being on this transplant floor truly makes you appreciate your relative health. Below are some of Michelle’s recent stats.

11/27 (Day +7): WBC 0.79 (ANC 0.54)
11/28 (Day +8): WBC 0.69 (ANC 0.50)
11/29 (Day +9): WBC 0.21 (ANC 0.08)
11/30 (Day +10): WBC 0.27 (ANC 0.05)

You’ll see that her WBCs went up and then came right back down, which is quite normal. The team expects the next rise to be more sustained and to accelerate. We hope that leads to being discharged from the hospital in the not too distant future.

I am thankful for so much and am grateful to so many people. This past Thursday, I was most thankful for two mothers out there who donated their baby’s umbilical cord to a public cord blood bank. For anyone out there who knows an expectant mother, please ask them to donate (more info here). So many parents don’t even know it’s an option. Each umbilical cord that is thrown away as “medical waste” could save someone’s life. I still need to get more educated on this process, but I am happy to help find information for any curious mothers out there.

When I talk to people about marrow registration or Project Michelle, I’m quick to write or talk about how thousands of patients are looking for matches every day, but it’s still difficult for me when I actually learn about a specific patient’s story. Today was one of those days. My heart sank when I read an email from Janell Lamela telling me about her brave daughter Maile who has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. Maybe I’m already emotionally worn down from our own journey, but I started to cry when I saw her picture and thought about how no 3-year old should be going through what Michelle is dealing with.

For anyone reading the Project Michelle blog for the first time and thinking that they don’t need to register or organize a registration drive anymore now that Michelle is in treatment, think about Maile.

Maile is one of 5 children, including a twin sister. Maile was diagnosed with ALL when she was 5 months old. She did receive treatment when she was an infant and remained in remission for about 19 months. On June 24, 2008, she relapsed, and she is currently receiving treatment. She’s in remission again but needs a bone marrow transplant to help ensure that the disease doesn’t return again. Unfortunately, Maile does not have a match. Maile is Filipino, Puerto Rican, and Mexican.

Here is an interesting story from Janell. Maile is receiving methotrexate (just like Michelle) as part of her protocol. Well, Maile is receiving the treatment, and her twin sister is getting the mouth sores. That’s so crazy to me. I don’t understand how twins are connected like that. I can’t imagine what Maile’s twin is thinking and feeling as her sister is fighting this disease.

Another cute tidbit, Maile is always asking her mom to kiss her on the head, as she is sure that it makes her hair grow back faster.

Be a hero. Please help save Maile.

Not much new on the Seattle front. Surprisingly, I didn’t get my usual spinal tap headache from my first dose of Methotrexate chemo on Friday. I guess this caffeine stuff really works except I can’t fall asleep until like 2 in the morning. I would trade headaches for being wired off Mountain Dew any day though. Saturday, my brother came for a day and we did a 3 mile hike down to the beach at Discovery Park. Mabel flew in Saturday night and she brought our old apartment life to Seattle which includes watching downloaded tv shows, many hours on the internet/facebook and giggling til I’m about to pee in my pants.

I’m happy to see that our friends are still doing registration drives. THANK YOU!!! I wasn’t the first person in search of a donor and I certainly won’t be the last. Plus during these drives we can also educate people about the cord blood registry too.

I can’t wait for the day when a person from one of our drives gets selected and goes all the way through with the donation process. He/she will definitely be added on our new Everyday Heroes page. (Perfect segue into my introduction of our new page.) Check out these amazing lifesavers! Our first featured story is about my fabulous cousin-in-law Michele. In 2001 she donated to a stranger in her thirties. Michele goes into detail about the donation process which will be helpful for anyone who wants to learn about the actual the process firsthand from a person that’s gone through it.

Please join me in giving these heroes a silent round of applause. Thank you so much for stepping up to help save someone else’s life. Bravo!!

Congrats Project Michelle!! We just got a letter from NMDP that said we won the Excellence in New Media Award. “This award is presented to a journalist, individual or group that has raised significant awareness and engaged the public in the NMDP mission through the use of online media such as Web sites, blogs or other tools.” I didn’t even realize we were up for an award. How exciting, huh? I am taking NO credit for this. This award belongs to all of you that have worked long and hard for Project Michelle. Give yourselves a pat on the back!

Quinn Bui, the owner of Thirteen Minutes magazine (a bicultural Asian American fashion magazine), is hosting a fashion show to benefit A3M. With a special performance from Kaba Modern! Woo Hoo! Additionally, there will be a registration drive at the event in my honor and other leukemia patients on October 17, 2008 at 9 pm. A3M is very excited about this event and has projected that there will be 1500 people in attendance. A3M has been so wonderful to Project Michelle and I am very thankful for everything they have done. Special thanks to Co Hoanganh and Chu Thach from A3M who even came to visit me in San Francisco over the summer. I am happy that my mom has them to talk to in Vietnamese for love and support. I know I normally talk about AADP in Northern California because I live in the SF Bay Area, but I really do appreciate all of the organizations across the US who have spent countless hours helping find me a donor. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

If you are in the LA area, please come out to show your support to Project Michelle and A3M.

Every year Hyphen magazine hosts Mr. Hyphen, a male pageant to celebrate the men of the Asian American community. Contestants come from various non-profit organization and have devoted themselves to worthy community causes. AADP asked my dear buddy Eric Tam to represent them as well as Project Michelle in the competition. Eric eagerly signed up to participate so he could spread the word about our registration drives and the dire need for Asians on the marrow registry.

Eric strutted his stuff, danced his booty off, and was eloquent during Q&A. I was a proud mama bird. Personally, I thought he was ROBBED of the title (as did many other people in the audience). Check out his talent portion, Evolution of Hip Hop. Notice the Project Michelle t-shirt! Nice touch huh?

I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time. The seratonin levels were definitely high throughout the room. It was a sold out event and all of the contestants did a great job. The Hyphen family has been extremely helpful and generous to Project Michelle and I’m really happy I got a chance to meet some them at the event.

Special thanks to Eric who lost 10 lbs, gave up carbs, spent many hours rehearsing and let me amuse myself by teaching him the roger rabbit dance. He’s like the fobby brother I never had. I <3 Eric Tam.

When I went back to work in March, I worked for a few hours on a small assignment with Donielle, a manager in Forensics. My first impression of Donielle was that she was a healthy, young, intelligent, hardworking and strong woman. Shortly after the assignment, KPMG printed a nationwide article about Project Michelle and I received many nice emails from people throughout the company wanting to get involved and wishing me well.

I was surprised that Donielle also wrote to me. She shared that she had recently been diagnosed with a blood disorder called Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) that could turn into Leukemia. Her doctors said that she needed a transplant right away so that it would not turn into Leukemia. This was prior to my own relapse, so I shared my experience from last year. Unfortunately, her disease did turn into Acute Leukemia and in July she had to receive chemotherapy to treat the cancer. She stayed in the hospital for over a month.

Donielle and I have been frequently checking up on each other and I am always in awe of her strength. Even during the tough times she never shows an ounce of fear, pessimism, or doubt (WOW!). In the hospital, instead of being a tv zombie, she kept herself busy by studying for the CPA exam (double WOW!).

This past week she checked herself back into Stanford Hospital and has been receiving radiation and chemo as a part of conditioning for the transplant. Her actual transplant is set for this Tuesday, October 7th. (Doctors found a 9/10 unrelated donor for Donielle. Thank to Donielle’s unrelated donor! You’re AMAZING!) I am thrilled that Donielle treatment is moving along. Please keep Donielle in your prayers.

Donielle, hang in there. My heart is with you.

Holy Cal!! We got over 700 people registered at UC Berkeley today! Our grand total comes to 1,400 people in just two days. Of course I consider any drive to be a success if we can get at least one new person to commit themselves to the registry (Hey, I only need ONE person to save my life), but this has been by far the most successful Project Michelle drive ever. 1,400! Can you believe it?!? It’s so amazing.

The success at the Cal Drive was no small feat. It took hundreds of hours planning, publicizing, flyering, xeroxing, making posters, making classroom announcements, facebooking, etc, etc. I was NOT the reason nor the inspiration that made this drive successful. It was YOU the volunteers that inspired, motivated, mobilized and rallied Cal students to become heroes today. All I did was lend my bald, albeit lovely, head to a few posters. Your generosity and hard work made this all possible.

Just thinking about the amount of work that everyone put into this drive makes my heart fill up with so much pride and love. A gazillion thanks to AADP, the volunteers and student organizations.

Additionally, thank you to all of the newly registered potential donors. You have taken the first step in saving a life. If you ever get a call for follow up testing (Get ready…I’m going to be praying like crazy that you do), I implore you to respond quickly and stay committed.

I really needed this news to boost my spirits. This waiting game has been taking a toll on my heart, but I feel rejuvenated and am all smiles tonight. Thank you so so so so much. Go BEARS!

On a side note, here’s a beautiful message that a Berkeley student wrote on my wall today that made my eyes well up. Thanks Vince.

–

Michelle,

It is hard to find words of my own to express how I felt upon hearing your story, so instead I wish to send a quote your way. It truly sums up how I feel.

I hope that whoever you are, you escape this place. I hope that the world turns, and that things get better. But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that, even though I do not know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you, I love you. With all my heart, I love you.

Love and Prayer,
Vince

Huge thank you to everyone who came out today: AADP, the Project Michelle volunteers, all of the CAL clubs and organizations, and the 600+ people who decided to join the bone marrow registry!

Some of our troops were out there for over 10 hours. It was nonstop talking, flyering, walking and registering. Our feet are sore, but our spirits high. We’re ready to tackle Day 2, and hope to register even more people tomorrow.

A bunch of our friends got together to make rally signs for this drive, and I kept commenting on how they made us look like picketers. In our own right, we ARE protesting something big–the shortage of bone marrow donors for patients like Michelle. Please continue to invite everyone you know to our CAL MEGA DRIVE, part deux. Tell them to look for the hippie protesters on Upper Sproul and Campanile holding these signs (can’t miss us):

**Thank you to Anna and SFFC for making them!

Michelle sends her love and thanks to everyone as well. Throughout the course of this drive, her homework assignment has been to rest and positively visualize us registering her match. Our hundreds of supporters from today are definite proof that Michelle’s amazing spirit is widely spreading throughout the Berkeley campus. Here’s to an even stronger Day 2!

Michelle and I too often find about another patient needing to find a donor for a bone marrow transplant. It reminds me that Michelle is not alone in her fight and that the anxiety and fear that we all feel for Michelle is unfortunately being felt by another set of family and friends.

We always say there are thousands of other patients like Michelle looking for donor every day. Well, meet Krissy, who has been diagnosed with Myleodysplastic Syndrome. Krissy has a primary bone marrow failure in which her marrow is not producing the healthy cells it needs to be. Krissy is also 26 years old. From her bio, “some would say that Krissy has a spunky spirit. She may be small in stature, but has a big personality.” Hmmm…sounds like someone else I know.

Krissy’s family and friends have set up Team Krissy and been working their tails off setting up drives just like everyone on the Project Michelle team. And like Michelle, Krissy is of mixed descent (Krissy is half Japanese and half Caucasian), so finding a match will be more difficult for her as well. If you know of anyone of Caucasian/Asian descent that has not registered, please ask them to register.

For those of you that are stumbling upon our site and just learning about Michelle and the need for donors on the registry, know that Project Michelle is not just about Michelle. You could save Michelle, Krissy, or another patient looking for their match. YOU may be their only match and their only chance to live. Please register.

<krissy photo>

The Cal Football Fan Appreciation Day registration drive this past Saturday was a huge success! Big thank you’s go out to the entire Cal Athletic Department, especially the Game Day Experience crew, the Media Relations team, and of course Coach Tedford and the football players.

We registered 191 potential donors, and we couldn’t have done this without AADP and all the Project Michelle volunteers that came out to recruit more donors.

Michelle was able to meet Coach Tedford and many players, who were all very eager to help. After registering, one player said “make sure you call me. I really want to donate.” This enthusiasm was infectious as many fans walked over to learn more and register after seeing the players’ support of Project Michelle. Here are some pictures from the drive (with more to come later).

On Tuesday night, Michelle and I enjoyed dinner with many of the marrow donor recruiters from the western region of National Marrow Donor Program (including the NMDP offices & affiliates such as AADP and A3M). Since Michelle and I aren’t able to travel outside of the bay area, it was really great to finally meet the amazing recruiters who support the Project Michelle team at all the drives across the country. We are so grateful for all the compassionate recruiters out there.

We also met an amazing and inspirational woman named Gina Cousineau. Her son Evan was diagnosed with adrenoleukodystrophy, a horrific genetic metabolic disease, in April 2007. He underwent a cord blood transplant but developed a virus that in combination with his severely compromised immune system was too much even for this strong boy. Evan passed away on November 2, 2007, the day before his and his twin sister’s 10th birthday. Through Evan’s journey, Evan’s family and friends started a campaign of “Saving Lives in Honor of Evan”. Gina has felt the heartache of losing her son and will fight for the rest of her life to relieve others from this. To find out more about how you can make a difference and save lives (not just through marrow registration but also by donating blood and becoming an organ donor), keep reading the daily journals on her site and check out Evan’s Website.

Some interesting things I learned on Tuesday from Gina…

Did you know that only 5% of eligible Americans donate blood? Eligible donors can donate blood every 56 days. Since your blood donation is separated into its components: red blood cells, platelets and plasma, you can help save the lives of 3 people every two months.

Did you know that you can donate platelets every two weeks? Donating platelets involves a process called apheresis, where whole blood is separated into components, and the platelets are removed, while you relax, watch TV or read. You don’t lose any blood and your platelets are replenished in about 48 hours. The entire process takes about two hours. That means that you have the opportunity to save the life of a patient every two weeks.

So why is this important or relevant? Because Michelle is often the patient that needs blood transfusions and platelets to keep her alive when her counts are low. Michelle typically gets two blood transfusions and two platelet transfusions after every round of chemo. It’s so funny that I dedicate every day to getting new people to say they will donate marrow to save Michelle’s life. I forgot that countless strangers have already saved Michelle’s life so many times. I am thankful for those people who took the time out of their busy days to make a valuable impact on a stranger’s life because that stranger is the love of my life.

I am now pledging to make saving lives through blood/platelet transfusion part of the routine of my life. There is no reason for me not to.

Michelle and our new friend Gina:
