I was a avid follower of Michelles journey from when I saw her projectmichelle site on stickam a few years ago. Michelle, Van, Mabel, and I did exchange emails from time to time. Unfortunately, I didnt know of Michelle's passing until this very moment, and I am so sad. When ever I would write to Michelle either through email or facebook, even with her condition, she would always take the time to write back, and ask me about my nephew that is now dealing with a rare type of leukemia. I told Michelle that when she got better she and Van needed to honeymoon in Hawaii and I would be there to give her a great big hug. Unfortunately I will never get a chance to receive my hug from her. Michelle's spirit was so beautiful and even though I never got to meet her in person, she was my hero. She was a fighter. Her strength and faith and unconditional kindness was something thing that is so rare in a person. Something we all strive for.
My deepest sympathies go to the family and friends that knew her best... esp to Van and Mabel.

Much Love Michelle. We miss you so much, but we take great comfort that you are no longer in pain anymore. Thanks for inspiring so many and I will never forget you.
Much Aloha, Bari

I found this blog today ~ my husband had his last chemo for non-hodgkins (large b cell) 9/1/09. My best friend/sister died this summer in the middle of this. Michelle is truly loved and will not be forgotten. This tribute to her life is helping me cope this morning. Thank you.

It was thanks to Michelle that I signed up to be a registered bone marrow donor. I have been following her blog for a long time now and I am saddened by her passing. My condolences to Van, her family, and all her friends.

I do not know Michelle personally but am also, amongst others, a loyal follower of this blog. As a result of reading her blog, I became much more knowledgable of this deadly disease and became a registered donor. I could not stop thinking about Michelle even as I took my annual vacation to Japan, and on July 19 at the Meiji Shrine, wrote out an ema tablet praying that she find peace. Just like the impact she left on me, it is clear from all other comments how monumentally she has impacted the lives of thousands of people from all over the world. For as long as I live, I will never forget Michelle Maykin for the warrior-like personality she had in fighting this disease - it is to me the greatest tenacity I have ever witnessed in a person. I hate the fact that sometimes it takes the struggles and even death of another person, including a person one may not know, to change perception in your own life and I am still wrapping my head around why that is so. My most heartfelt condolences to Van and Michelle's family and friends.

I have been offline this whole week and one of the first things I did tonight was to check the blog for any news on how Michelle was doing. I am so sad to hear the news of Michelle's passing. I stumbled on her blog some time ago and would check often for updates on how she was doing. This is so heart breaking. My thoughts and prayers are with all of her family and friends and those whom she has touched with her story and courage.

Dear Van and family,

Please accept my condolences on Michelle's passing. She was indeed a person who was a light to the world, and she'll always be remembered. You and Michelle and all your loved ones have made a tremendous contribution to helping to equalize the chances for all patients with these deadly diseases. Although we never met in person, I can assure you that your efforts and willingness to share with me and so many others, have made a real difference.

Best regards,

Joana

RIP, Michelle.

Michelle, you taught us how to live, you gave us the gift of hope, and you did it all as a selfless human being. Now your life has transcended from this world making you an even greater force that continues to watch over us.
